Swami Ramakrishna Paramahansa was a great spiritual icon of 19th century in India. The childhood name of Swami Ramakrishna was Gadadhar Chattopadhyay. He was born in a poor Brahmin family in 1836 at Kamarmukur in Hooghly district of West Bengal. He took deep interest in spiritualism and religion from an early age. He became the priest of a Kali temple in Dakshineshwar, the suburbs of Calcutta at the age of twenty. He continued his services as a priest of that temple till his last breath in 1886.

Swami Ramakrishna was the spiritual guide of many people. Swami Vivekanand was his ablest and greatest disciple. Swami Vivekananda founded Ramakrishna Mission in 1897, anmed after his guru to eradicate many religious and social evils in the Hindu society. Thus Swami Ramakrishna was not directly associated with the foundation of the Ramakrishna Mission but his spiritual views and ideology provided the basic philosophical ground to the Mission which was later nurtured by Swami Vivekananda.
