The land that floods when the river has too much water is called the floodplain. After a flood, the water returns to the river and leaves behind rich, fertile soil on the floodplain. The fertile soil of the floodplain is good for growing crops, but a floodplain can be a dangerous place to live. Most of the land in the southern Asian country of Bangladesh is in the floodplain of the Ganges and Brahmaputra Rivers.
