Wellfleet Bay Virus, Quarjarvirus

Mortality events have occurred in wintering common eiders (Somateria mollissima) around Cape Cod, Massachusetts. The deaths were associated with an orthomyxovirus, Wellfleet Bay Virus, species Quarjarvirus.

Species affected: Avian

Symptoms: Increased mortality in flocks of birds; Anaemia, pale mucous membranes or skin; Sudden death, found dead; Underweight (poor condition, thin, emaciated, unthriftiness, ill thrift); Weight loss;

Public health importance: Not applicable.
