Hud Hud Cyclone in Bay of Bengal

The cyclonic storm named ‘Hud Hud’ building in the North Andaman sea and adjoining Bay of Bengal is likely to intensify further. There will be strong wind in the city and other coastal area of Odisha and Andhra Pradesh in next few days. According to DD news, the tropical cyclone ‘Hud Hud’ will be hit the coastal area of Odisha and Northern parts of Andhra Pradesh by the Sunday. The Department of Weather warned the fishermen not to enter the sea for fishing. There is possibility of intensification of the storm in next four days.

The name Hudhud had been suggested by Oman after the name of national bird of Israel, "Hudhud". The name of next cyclone in the region will be called as Nilofer named by Pakistan. The history of naming the tropical cycoles began years back because names are presumed to be easier to remember than the numbers and technical terms. The predicted short distinctive names are easy to write as well as in communication.

According to Dr. L. S. Rathor, Director General, India Meteorological Department, there is possibility intensification of Hudhud in west-northern parts. ‘Hud Hud will be intensified in the next forthcoming four days. By Friday it will further intensify and will be more severe which will be further intensified on Saturday and on 12/10/2014 i.e. on Sunday at noon there is possibility to cross the areas in between Vishakhapttanam and Gopalpur.

Warning for coastal areas of north Andhra Pradesh and south Odisha

1.    Warning of heavy rainfall: Rainfall at most places with heavy (6.5 – 12.4 centimeter) to very heavy falls (12.5 – 24.4 centimeter) at a few places and isolated extremely heavy falls (≥ 24.5 centimeter) would occur over east Godavari, Visakhapatnam, Vijayanagaram and Srikakulam districts of north coastal Andhra Pradesh and south Odisha from 11th evening of October 2014 onwards. Rainfall would occur at most places with heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places over remaining districts of Andhra Pradesh and north coastal Odisha during the same period.

2.    Warning for wind: Squally wind speed reaching 50 - 60 kilo meter per hour gusting to 70 kilo meter per hour would commence along and off north Andhra Pradesh and south Odisha coasts from 11th morning onwards. The wind speed would increase to 130-140 kilo meter per hour gusting to 155 kilo meter per hour from 12th morning along and off north Andhra coast and 80 - 90 kilo meter per hour along and off south Odisha coast.

3.    Sea condition along and off north Andhra Pradesh and south Odisha coasts: Sea condition would be rough to very rough from 11th morning. It would gradually become phenomenal from 12th morning onwards along and off north Andhra coast and very rough to high along and off south Odisha coast.

4.   Storm surge warning: Storm surge of about 1 - 2 meters above astronomical tide would inundate low lying areas of east Godavari, Visakhapatnam, Vijayanagaram and Srikakulam districts of north coastal Andhra Pradesh at the time of landfall.

5.  Damage expected: Under the influence of system, extensive damage to kutcha houses. Partial disruption of power and communication lines. Minor disruption of rail and road traffic. Potential threat from flying debris. Flooding of escape routes.

6.  Action suggested: Suspension of fishing operations in area of influence of cyclone. Judicious regulation of aviation, navigation, rail and road traffic. People in affected areas to remain at safe places around landfall period.
