Teacher’s Day in India – Honouring Teachers

A teacher is just like a candle who consumes itself to enlighten the way of others (Anonymous).

Teachers are at the heart of the educational process. The greater the importance attached to education as a whole - whether for cultural transmission, for social cohesion and justice, or for human resource development so critical in modern, technology-based economies - the higher is the priority that must be accorded to the teachers responsible for that education.

The Teacher’s day in India is celebrated on 5th September of every year since 1962 as it is the birth anniversary of Dr. Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan, a prominent thinker, philosopher and educator in India. Dr. S. Radhakrishnan was the former president of India. Throughout the India tributes are paid to noted scholar and former president of India to celebrate his birth anniversary. Dr. S. Radhakrishnan believed that teacher should be the best minds in the country.

Teacher’s professional knowledge and skills are the most important factor for quality education. It is the teacher who pays valuable contribution in the society by imparting knowledge and enlightening and shaping the career of students. Teachers explore the fertile mind of young children and plant the seed of curiosity in them. This inculcates the values of self-learning, exploration, and philosophical inquiry.

A teacher gently touches the fertile mind of young children and sows the seed of curiosity in them. In early minds of students, it inculcates the value of self learning, exploration and philosophical facts. A teacher can spark the brain of a child to ignite to unimaginable heights, enthuses to become teacher, engineer, doctor, politician, administrator and participant in the development of nation.

In most of the schools and institutions celebrations are performed on this day. The ceremony usually projected with a warm Teacher’s Day speech paying respect and thanking teachers for their valuable contribution towards the building of nation’s brains. This is often followed by cultural programs and other activities which make the event special and memorable.

All of us have been students at some stage of our life and have benefited from our teachers. Teacher’s Day celebration is a wonderful especially for all of us to our gratitude and appreciation to our worthy teachers.

 

Just like to Teacher’s Day celebrations in India, World Teacher’s Day is celebrated on 5th October of every year by UNESCO (The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization).  In China every 10th September is celebrated as Teacher’s Day.
