Nutrient requirements and soil

Font size: Decrease font Enlarge font

The growth of cacti and succulents depends upon various available nutrients. Just like to other agricultural crops they also need nutrients particularly nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium for proper growth. If soil is deficient in either of the nutrient(s) the growth of the plants will be retarded and thus flowers either will be undeveloped or they will be of poor quality.

Any standard but balanced houseplant fertilizer (with N 20 : P 20 : K 20) available in the market can be used. Slow release granular fertilizers also convenient to use. To induce bloom and improve flower size, a fertilizer with low nitrogen and high phosphorus content can be used. Over fertilizer addition should be avoided i.e. if the plants are too lushly or losing their characteristic shapes. At the time of planting mix a base fertilizer i.e. compost or soil with the required fertilizer. After it apply liquid or solid fertilizer with routine watering. A regular addition of fertilizer is required while propagation.

In garden, there should be proper proportions of good drainage with infrequent watering, regular and diluted additions of fertilizers and good light and fresh air with proper ventilation.
